François Morellet

Biography

François Morellet, April 30, 1926- May 10, 2016, was a French minimalist and conceptual artist. He is mainly known for his "Textures", both on paper and on wood panel, in this case they are called "Griage", and for his light installations. In particular, the "Griage" are made by fixing on a table, painted black, some oxidized iron wires that have a well-defined distance between them. These wires form a layer and generally there are two or three layers for each work. Usually the layer in direct contact with the wooden panel has the wires arranged horizontally, while the upper layers have the iron wires arranged at an angle, the wires of each layer all have the same inclination. Furthermore Morellet has also executed spatial structures with approximately spherical shapes. In this case the wires are replaced by iron bars arranged in an orthogonal grid and with the size of the grids decreasing as one moves away from the centre.

The Conceptual Art sets out to overcome painting-painting in favor of idea-painting or conceptual painting. In other words, in Conceptual Art it is more important the gestation of the work and the programming of its execution. It is therefore an art thought, reasoned rather than felt. Execution becomes a fact of pure assembly of objects that form the work. Of course the visual aspect does not disappear completely as traces of painting are often found among the authors, but they are traces of painting put in a certain order that springs from the artist's thought. A precursor of Conceptual Art is considered Marchel Duchamp with his famous "urinal".
