This "Cloud" (*Nuvola*) by Enzo Cucchi resembles a circle from Dante’s *Inferno*, with a section of the painting filled by countless skulls scattered haphazardly. Beneath them, we seem to make out a ship with two smokestacks ploughing through a stormy sea. What, then, are these skulls? Perhaps they are the remains of people lying on the seabed, victims of the shipwrecks that have occurred—and continue to occur—at sea.
