Karel Appel was an artist in the group Cobra. The work is probably from the "archers" series that Appel made specifically for a solo exhibition. On a black background Appel spreads the material with wide and quick brushstrokes. The color of these brushstrokes varies from yellow to fuchsia to red to brown. The work is an impression of arms, arches, faces that take aim, stretch the bow and hurl the arrow. Appel's work is a suggetsion of strength, of tension with almost dramatic accents.
